What Do You Want?

One evening last week I sat with our children to watch the start of the American Idol season - a singing competition. I find the show intriguing because there are so many talented singers and yet it isn't always the one with the best voice who wins.

The show is broken up by commercials, advertising the newest car models, various products that you might or might not need and the stores with the biggest sales. The network also uses it as an opportunity to promote the other programs it offers. During some of these previews we are forced to close our eyes and sing loudly to block out the negative imagery and sounds coming from the television. Although we've had that reaction before, it struck me in a different way last week.

Why do we as loving, caring human beings knowingly subject ourselves to such violence and negativity? By watching shows with "Viewer discretion advised", why do we allow ourselves to focus on exactly what we don't want to appear in our lives and in our world?

What would it look like if we could turn things around and focus on what we do want? If television and movie producers created positive, upbeat movies and tv shows. News concentrated more on the good things going on in the world and for individuals.

We can start individually by focusing on what we do want in our lives - just as the winner of American Idol does. Inevitably, things you don't want surface up. Use them to help you define what it is you do want and let go of any limiting beliefs that might be holding you back. Once this is clear, begin to focus on what you want to see for the world.

Can you feel the energy shifting?
